ALTON JONES, 96, longtime area rancher, died Wednesday at Casa Arena Blanca Nursing Center in Alamogordo. Mr. Jones was born March 4, 1892, in a covered wagon at Lookout Point on the Black River in Eddy County, N.M., to Margaret and Tom Jones. The Jones Family was on their way to the Sacramento Mountains from Brown County, Texas.
After attending school in Weed, N.M., Jones later moved from the mountains to the Wine Glass Ranch with his parents, brothers and sisters. He attended Goodnight College in Goodnight, Texas, which was built and supported by Charles Goodnight, famous old-time rancher, trail driver, and Texas Ranger. After his formal school, he returned to the ranch, where he lived until he entered U.S. Army, where he served in France during WWI.
After the war, he returned to Crow Flat, where he married Laura Cavender on June 15, 1920, in El Paso. They later homesteaded on the Wine Glass Ranch in southern Otero County, where they lived and ranched for over 60 years. Mr. Jones was considered by his peers as one of the finest cowmen of the time. A strong individual, he lived a long and productive life, loved by family and friends and without ever having made an enemy. His son Bob and grandson Bobby currently manage the family ranch.
Survivors include his wife Laura Jones, of southern Otero County; sons Fritz Jones and Bob Jones, both of Dale City, Texas; daughter Mona Lou Roberts of Alamogordo; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and sister Mary Prescott of El Paso.
Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cornudas Cemetery on the family ranch. Rev. Chief Lawson will officiate. Pallbearers will include Ben Snow, Roy Gilliland, Pete Lewis, Calvin "Pop" Snow, Sam Dodge, and Jimmy Foster. Honorary bearers will be Wilson Bennett, Bill Jones, Charlie Lee, D.D. Barker, Alvin Gentry, Howell Lewis, and Martin Lewis. Hamilton Funeral Home, Alamogordo, is in charge of arrangements.
