Kingswood Sprott, a former mayor of Lake Wales and chairman of the Florida Citrus Commission, died Sunday at Winter Haven Hospital. He was 85.

Sprott rose through the ranks of citrus pickers to own his own groves and a grove care-taking service. He served for five years with the state-run citrus commission, which markets and regulates Florida citrus products, and became its chairman in 1964-65.

He was a city commissioner in Lake Wales from 1954 through 1956, and served as mayor in 1956-57.

Sprott was born in the small farming community of Manning, S.C., and moved to Lake Wales in his youth. He later moved to Winter Haven in 1972, where he was a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church.

His surviving relatives include his wife, Dolores; his son, Lakeland Attorney Kingswood Sprott Jr.; a brother, Joseph of Georgetown, S.C.; two sisters, Lydia Atkinson of Macon, Ga., and Maude Freeman of Brevard, N.C.; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Paul Episcopal Church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Marion Nelson Funeral Home of Lake Wales.
