MER ROUGE, LA - Funeral services for Richard Harp Blackwell, age 73 of Mer Rouge, Louisiana will be held outdoors on the grounds of The Blackwell Cabin on the banks of the Bonne Idee on Green Lane near Mer Rouge, Louisiana.

Reverend JoAnne Pounds will officiate.

Interment and committal services will follow in the Bonne Idee- Harp Cemetery on Merton Bowe Road near Mer Rouge, Louisiana.

Services are under the direction of Cox Funeral Homes of Oak Grove and Bastrop, Louisiana.

Mr. Blackwell passed into eternal life on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Saint Francis Medical Center in Monroe, Louisiana.

Mr. Blackwell was a native and lifelong resident of Mer Rouge, Louisiana, where he was a member of the Mer Rouge United Methodist Church. He was a 1965 graduate of Mer Rouge High School. He attended USL in Lafayette, Louisiana and attended and graduated from Northeast Louisiana University in Monroe, Louisiana in 1972. He was a verteran of the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired after 35 years as a Rural Mail Carrier with the United States Postal Service.

He is preceded in death by his father, William Thomas Blackwell, Sr. and his mother, Dorothy Maud (Harp) Blackwell.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Libby Cox Blackwell of Mer Rouge, Louisiana; son, Patrick Blackwell of Austin, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Margarett (Blackwell) and John Pruitt of Monroe, Louisiana; granddaughter, Laura Jane Pruitt of Monroe, Louisiana; brother and sister-in-law, William Thomas Blackwell, Jr. and Janet Blackwell of Bastrop, Louisiana; brother and sister-in-law, John and Lou Blackwell of New Iberia, Louisiana; and sister, Mary Blackwell Baskin of Youngsville, Louisiana.

Pallbearers are: Amos Warner, Lannie Philley, Dino Spires, Pat Bonner, Allen Spires, Jr., Sam Spires, George Spires, Joseph Spires, Matt Hayden, and Ben Hayden.

Memorials may be made to the Mer Rouge United Methodist Church in Mer Rouge, Louisiana.
