Heyward was the husband of Genelia Huffman Gainey. They were active members of Calvary Baptist Church. He retired as a contractor in the HVAC industry following numerous years of service.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 66 years, Genelia are his sons, John Gainey (wife, Terri), Ronnie Gainey(wife, Donna); grandchildren, Jonathan Gainey, Nicholas Gainey, Nicholas Dowless, Christy Dowless, Matthew Gainey (Kyndle), McKenzie Nance (husband, C.J.); one great-grandson Gavin Gainey and a great-grandchild (Nance) on the way. He was preceded in death by brothers, J.C. Gainey, James L. Gainey, Willie Gainey; sisters, Dorothy Curtis, Mary Gulledge, and Helen Boan.
