While Rachel is listed as their mother in various records, it is not entirely clear if Jennie, Roy and Annie are Rachel's children or her nieces and nephew. Joseph "Joe" Barrett (son of Lemon and Jonie Barrett) married Rachel's older sister Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" Baker on October 2, 1901 in Beaver Dam, Pitt County, North Carolina with W. C. Joyner, Justice of the Peace, performing the ceremony . It appears Lizzie may have died before 1910, but just when is unknown. Some or all of the three Barrett children may actually be hers, or if she died earlier on, perhaps Joe married Rachel, although no marriage has been located and she is listed under her maiden name Baker in the 1910 census.
The mystery is further complicated by the fact that a Rachel Baker is listed twice with slightly varying ages in the family of Wright Baker, Sr., both as his daughters, in the 1920 census. Presumably they are both the same person as there is nothing linking another Rachel to Wright's family. Annie's father is listed as Wright Baker on her marriage records and not Joe Barrett. The double listing of Rachel be the source that has given rise to the idea that Wright Baker, Jr. was her father and that a Rachel (Tyson) Baker was her mother. However, Wright Jr. married Sarah Hines close to the year she was born, and he would have been rather young. Most likely, Annie's "father" was actually her grandfather Wright Sr. as this was not the first time he was listed as her father (see 1920 census), and Rachel "Tyson" is Wright Jr.'s sister.
