Richard D. "Rick" Shuler, 79, passed away peacefully after a short illness, Friday, June 25, 2021, with his family and his Pastor, Rev. Mark Fischer, by his side. He was born April 17, 1942, in Glendale, Calif., to Richard and Marian (Douglas) Shuler.

Rick grew up in the San Fernando Valley area and graduated from J.H. Francis Polytechnic Senior High School in Sun Valley, Calif. He enjoyed spending many weeks sailing with his parents in the family sailboat from Long Beach to Catalina and along the California coast. This is where he learned to love the freedom of the sea.

He graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in mathematics. This is where he met and married the love of his life in 1964, Martha Kyne....

He was drafted Into the US Army and commissioned into the Army Corp of Engineers in 1966. His first assignment was Germany where he returned to many times on business and for pleasure.
In Vietnam he commanded an asphalt plant and rock quarry Engineer Company. After he retired, he returned to Vietnam with Martha and Bob for a visit.

While on active duty he attended George Washington University full time and earned a master's degree in engineering management. He utilized his master's as the project officer on the civilian side of the Corp of Engineers in the construction of Buchanan and Hidden dams in California.
Among his most memorable assignments was a tour in Korea with his family. He also had the opportunity to command an Engineer Battalion and took his 700 men To Honduras and built a farm to market road and dam as part of a good will nation building project.

After retiring with 26 years of service to our country he earned a second master's in mathematics at the University of Kansas. Both his children were students there along with him and that's when he became a KU basketball fan and ticket holder for over 30 years. He was also a season Chiefs ticket holder for over 35 years.

He worked for 15 years as a civilian military contractor at Ft. Leavenworth. He was a
terrain analyst and was known as "Dr. Dirt." He traveled all over the US, Korea, Japan and
Germany on military exercises.

When Rick finally retired, he and Martha traveled the world over on land tours and over 20 cruises. He especially enjoyed Asia and the South Pacific.
If he wasn't planning a new adventure or going to his sporting events, he enjoyed reading military and detective novels.

Rick was a spiritual man who was very active in his church and community. He served on the Council of St. Martin Lutheran Church, was a member of the Old Bastards and Lions Club and he was on the Hollis Board of Directors. He was a gentle spirit who would strike up a conversation with anybody who was willing to engage. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

A funeral service will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 20, 2021, at St. Martin Lutheran Church, 13849 Hollingsworth Rd., Kansas City, KS, with Rev. Mark Fischer and Chaplain Sam Sanford officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Hollis Renewal Center, P.O. Box 402, Bonner Springs, KS 66012, or St. Martin Lutheran Church.
