Nancy was born in Loudon County, Virginia. Her parents were Francis and Elizabeth (Rector) Hieronymus. According to her marriage bond which was found in Winchester, Kentucky, Nancy's date of birth was in the year 1778. In this bond was the note signed by her father, Francis, giving her permission to marry John Lyons, June 13, 1798.

On October 10, 1803, John Lyons purchased 97 acres in Fleming County, Kentucky, on Locust Creek about one-half mile from the village of Hillsboro, Kentucky. It is here that John & Nancy built their log cabin and raised their 9 children.
