In 1910 he and his wife and their four children lived with his parents in a house they owned, with a mortgage, in Lack Township, Juniata County, PA. He worked as an agent for a tea company, and his father as a house carpenter.

In 1920 he, Lulu, their six children, and his mother lived in a house they were renting at 24 Williard Street in Binghamton, NY. He worked as a machine operator in a planing mill, Verna as a sorter in a cigar factory, and Samuel as a bellboy at a hotel.

In 1930 he and his youngest daughter Winifred were boarders in the home of Evans Harris at 309 East Gennessee Street in Fayetteville, NY. He worked as a woodworker in a furniture factory.

In 1940 he and his second wife Eleanor lived in an apartment they were renting for $25 a month at 108 East Genessee Street in Fayetteville. He worked as a tool clerk for a die castings company, with an income in 1939 of $1054 for 52 weeks of work.
