Alex was a first-grader at Highland Springs Elementary School. He was an obedient boy and always called his mother after the bus dropped him off from school. One Wednesday afternoon, he didn't call. His mother came home to find his keys still in the front door, and his school books lying just inside the threshold. The cat was gone, so she assumed that he'd gone looking for his missing pet. But after an hour, as darkness settled in with no sign of her son, she began to panic and called police. A desperate, around-the-clock manhunt followed. Police investigators quickly went from thinking that Alex had wandered off and gotten lost to realizing that he'd been abducted. The search ended tragically three days later when a hunter found him in a patch of woods in nearby Hanover County. Some twenty-eight years later, John Crawford, was found guilty of Alex's abduction and murder. He was his mother's only child.
