Elma was a 1943 graduate of Gallup High School, Gallup, NM. After high school she attended both Western Business College in Albuquerque, NM, and Woodbury College in Los Angeles, CA. She worked 8 years as a bookkeeper at Gallup Mercantile and then 7 years at the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Elma was married to Ernest (Sonny) Bolin 1959-1979, and later divorced. They owned a gas station for twenty years, for which she was the bookkeeper.
She enjoyed her travels to Yugoslavia and Italy.
