Candler – Franklin Filmore Whetstine, age 77, passed away April 6, 2022.

A native of Mitchell County, Franklin was born May 22, 1944 to the late Fred Whetstine and the late Ada Grindstaff Whetstine.

Mr. Whetstine was employed as the Manager of Texaco service station for many years and was also employed as a mechanic and truck driver for Ingles. Franklin deeply loved his wife, Mildred, and dedicated himself to her care. He also held concern for his community, taking care of his neighborhood and his church, Luther Pentecostal Holiness Church. He loved his family and was always smiling when playing for hours with his great-grandchildren, Rylee and Kinslee. Franklin would often be seen at J & S, and afterward would go trout fishing or watching baseball and basketball, cheering for The Braves and The Tarheels. His memories will be cherished forever by those who knew him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 25 years, Mildred Coggins Whetstine who passed away in 2019; brothers, Paul Whetstine, and Arthur Whetstine; and sisters, Mildred McFee, Mary Ethel Hollifield, Louise Smith, and Francis Wilson.

Surviving are his step-children, Karen Hall and husband Robert, Kenneth Buchanan, and Steve Buchanan; grandchildren, Kyle Walker of Candler, Cassie McKinney and husband Steven of Canton, and Sydney Hall of Leicester; great-grandchildren, Rylee and Kinslee McKinney; brother, Howard Whetstine of Clayton; sister, Genevieve "Jenny" Worley of Granite Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Luther Pentecostal Holiness Church in Candler. Pastor Terry Green will be officiating.
