His mother was Sarah Mary McNab (circa 1785 - circa 1806), presumed to have died in the area of York Factory, prior to the arrival of the Lord Selkirk Settlers in the Red River Settlement.
Born decades prior to the Confederation of various British Territories in North America to form Canada, reliable records of his early life are scattered and difficult to obtain.
