Mary Elizabeth Sherod, daughter of David and Patsy Sherod, was born in Rockville, Kans., September 28, 1865, and departed this life at her home in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, February 27, 1945, at the age of 79 years, 4 months and 27 days.
She was united in marriage May 7, 1882, to George W. Barnard. To this happy union, six sons and four daughters were born. Her husband and two sons, David Newton and Phillip Henry, and one daughter, Mary Edna, preceded her in death.
In the spring of 1892, Mrs. Barnard, with her husband and three small children, came to Oklahoma, where in true and thrifty pioneer spirit they homesteaded nine miles northwest of Kingfisher. Later they bought and built the present family home, where they reared their family to manhood and womanhood.
At the early age of 15 years, she became a member of the Methodist church. After moving to Oklahoma she became affiliated with the Congregational church in the community in which she lived. She lived an earnest Christian life, and recently transferred her membership to the Methodist-Congregational church in Kingfisher, and revealed to her dear ones that she felt the call of the Master's voice, and often expressed to them that she was ready and willing to do her Master's bidding.
In 1929, Mrs. Barnard retired from the farm home to her home at 702 South Eighth street in Kingfisher. She found her deepest happiness in her children, always devoted and loyal to them and to her grandchildren, sharing their joys and hardships, lending a helping hand whenever possible.
She is survived by four sons, Joseph Luther, George Vernon and Emory Floyd of Kingfisher, and Lenard Walter of Ochelata, Okla.; three daughters, Mrs. Sadie Viola Sudan of Roundup, Mont., Mrs. Orpha Leona Weaver of Kingfisher, and Mrs. Clara Mable Ogle of Loyal; two sisters, Mrs. Jane Hicks of Kingfisher and Mrs. Jeff Shannon of Merwin, Mo.; twenty-three grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
Funeral service was held in the Methodist-Congregational church on Friday, March 2. Rev. H. D. Tomlin officiated, and was assisted by Rev. Wm. Huffman of the Baptist church. Interment was made in the Kingfisher cemetery.
