SHINGLEHOUSE, Pa. - Catherine A. "Cathy" Anders, 89, of Shinglehouse, passed away on Tuesday (April 12, 2022) in Sweden Valley Manor, Coudersport, after a long illness.
Born on Friday, Dec. 2, 1932, in Olean, N.Y., she was a daughter of William John and Pauline Minnie Moore Malone. On June 6, 1953, in Eldred, she married Llewellyn W. "Dutch" Anders, who passed away on Sept. 23, 1987.
Cathy was a graduate of Olean (N.Y.) High School, Class of 1950, and was a graduate of the former Westbrook Commercial Academy in Olean, as a stenographer.
After graduation from the Westbrook Academy, Cathy was employed by the Olean Times Herald for a short period of time, then was employed at the former High Q (which became AVX) in Olean, later worked at the former Ho-Sta-Geh Restaurant in Olean and then was employed at the former Hewitt Manor Nursing Home in Shinglehouse. In 1974, Cathy became the founding director of the Oswayo Valley Senior Center in Shinglehouse, where she devoted her life to helping the senior citizens of the area. She retired at the age of 80.
She had previously served on the Shinglehouse Borough Council.
Cathy was a former member, past matron and past secretary of Eureka Chapter No. 52 OES in Shinglehouse and was a past district deputy grand matron for District 12.
She loved to craft and knit. Cathy collected cardinals of all shapes, sizes and colors. Her greatest love was her family.
Surviving are three children, Patricia M. Kewley of Roulette, Stephen W. Anders of Little Genesee, N.Y. and Jane E. (Allen) Dingey of McConnelsville, Ohio; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, John P. (Marilyn) Malone of Farmersville, N.Y. and L. Thomas "Tom" (Becky) Malone of Olean; two sisters, Teresa M. Malone of Avon, N.Y. and Margaret Malone of Olean; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Cathy was predeceased by five brothers, Michael J. Malone, Richard J. Malone, Joseph R. Malone, Roy D. Malone and William "Bill" Malone; and a sister, Jane E. Nunamaker.
Family and friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. on Friday at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 S. Union St., Shinglehouse, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday (April 16, 2022) with the Rev. Russell J. Horning, of Shinglehouse, officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse.
