Noreen E. Nickleson McDormand, 88, of Benton, died Sunday morning, Dec. 23, 2007, at her home following a lengthy illness. The McDormands had been residents of Benton since December 1983. Born Aug. 8, 1919, in West Lorne, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius "Neil" Nickleson and Louise Van Loon Nickleson. She and her husband, the Rev. Vernon W. McDormand, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on May 1, 2007. Mrs. McDormand worked as a registered nurse in the nursery of the former Monongahela Hospital in New Eagle. Also, during her working career, she had also been employed by the Girl Scouts and was secretary for All Canada Churches of Christ in Toronto, Canada. She was a graduate of West Lorne-Dutton High School, in Dutton, Ontario, Canada; attended Alma College in St. Thomas, Ontario; attended Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, Texas, and earned her nurse's degree from Westmoreland County Community College, in Youngwood. She had been an active member of Benton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where her husband had been a pastor for many years. She had served as an elder, church secretary, sang in the choir, worked with the children's groups and was active in the ladies organizations of the church. She also served on the state board of the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ. Mrs. McDormand had also been a member of the Benton Lions Club and the Order of Eastern Star, Bloomsburg Chapter. She especially enjoyed spending time with family, her church family and her many friends. She was especially fond of her cats. Other hobbies included collecting dolls, gardening, and her growing flowers. She always looked forward to celebrating the Christmas holidays each year. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Vernon, are her three children, Kenneth Henry McDormand and wife, Lynn, of Racine, Wis., the Rev. Dorothy Ann McDormand, of Pittsburgh, and Frances McDormand and husband, Joel Coen, of Manhattan, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Kenneth McDormand and wife, Cherie, of Pontiac, Ill., Sheri Dawn McDormand, of Lincoln, Ill., Brian Lee McDormand, of Bloomington, Ill., and Pedro McDormand Coen, of Manhattan, N.Y.; 10 great-grandchildren; her brother, Carmen Nickleson, of St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada; and close friends, Gary and Alice Strauch, of Waller. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. in Benton Christian Church, Third and Church streets, Benton. Burial will be in Waller Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the McMICHAEL FUNERAL HOME INC., Benton, Pa.
