This memory is from William "Billy" Walker whose grandparents were Mr and Mrs Jordan dear friends.

Bettie, when I was about 5 years old my grandfather, Hoy Byley, was in an accident in which his leg was crushed. He was taken to Hotel Dieu, a Catholic Hospital in Beaumont, Texas. My mother and grandmother went to be with him. Hotel Dieu would not allow a minor child in the hospital even with their parents so I couldn't go. I stayed with Pete and Hattie. I don't remember how long I stayed, probably 4 or 5 days. I had never been away from my family before and I think I was pretty confused about what was going on. Pete and Hattie were wonderful. I spent most of the days in the garage with Pete and Hattie cooked the best food I had ever had. I still remember her pies. They kept me entertained and this was before TV. One night it rained very hard and Pete and Hattie had a tin roof. I remember going to sleep listening to the sound of the rain on that tin roof. They were probably in their 50's and taking care of a 5 year old boy and they did an excellent job. I loved them dearly. They were wonderful people and amazing friends. Good memories.
