Colonel Dan C. Allen, USAF, Retired, 92, a resident of Harrison, passed away Sunday, March 27, 2022, at the North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison.

He was born December 9, 1929, in Fayetteville, a son of Daniel McIlroy and Wordna Henley Allen. Dan grew up in Fayetteville and when he was a teen his family moved to a farm in Searcy County. He attended school in Fayetteville, St. Joe, and graduated from high school in Marshall. Dan attended the University of Arkansas where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. During his third year of college, Dan attended George Washington University in Washington, DC and worked for his representative, Jim Trimble, as a mail clerk. He graduated from the University of Arkansas with a BA in history and political science in 1951. When he was young, Dan used to daydream about seeing the European world instead of just looking at pictures. As luck would have it, his military career would fulfill those dreams, Dan spent more than ten years in Europe. He joined the United States Air Force in 1951. He was trained in intelligence work and was assigned to Sewart Air Force Base in Tennessee. Dan was awarded a direct commission in the United States Air Force in 1953 and served until his retirement in June 1984. Dan was trained once again in intelligence and served in Japan, Korea, and Formosa as a junior officer. In 1955, he married Mary Elizabeth Evers, and the couple had three sons. Dan served in New Hampshire, Ohio, Colorado, Maryland, and New York. He served overseas in France, Great Britain, and Czechoslovakia. Dan was always assigned as an intelligence officer, in representational work, and as an attaché in denied areas. Dan was sent to Ohio State University for his MA in history and later for a PhD in history in preparation for teaching at the United States Air Force Academy where he was an Assistant Professor of History and head of the Military History Section of the history department. Following this assignment, Dan was sent to the Royal Air Force Academy of the United Kingdom as a Senior United States Military Representative and Senior Tutor in Strategic Studies. Dan and Mary were assigned as the Defense and Air Attaché to the United States Embassy in Prague, Czechoslovakia. Both he and his wife enjoyed this tour very much. Finally, Dan was assigned as the Military Representative to the Military Staff Committee of the Security Council of the United Nations in New York. After he retired from the Air Force, he lived in Baltimore, Maryland and taught European History, Russian History, and Western Civilization in a boy's prep school, Calvert Hall College, where he was head of the history department. Dan and Mary traveled the world at the beginning of his retirement from the military, first leading tours of students to the Soviet Union and cruising with special friends, the Rucks from Baltimore. Needless to say, there are endless stories about the good times he and Mary had from those adventures. In 1996, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters by Mount Saint Mary's College for his excellence in teaching. In 1987, he began teaching European History and Russian History at the Johns Hopkins University Center for the Education of Talented Youth. Dan retired from that position in 2014. In 1993, Dan and Mary moved from Baltimore to Harrison. They bought an old home and restored it. Dan taught at North Arkansas College for 20 years and retired for the third time in 2016. He was active in church work and in the Lions Club. During his military career he was awarded an Army Good Conduct Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Medal with one Silver Oak Leaf cluster, and two Bronze Oak Leaf clusters, the National Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the Air Force Overseas Service Long Tour Ribbon, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, a Meritorious Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, and a Legion of Merit. He was very proud of his "Mustang Ribbon" as it showed his former enlisted service and when he went into a new position that he was either a good officer or a nincompoop. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Christopher Allen, who passed away suddenly in 2020, in Baltimore, Maryland; and a brother, Harold Allen.

Dan is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Allen of Harrison; two sons and a daughter-in-law, David Allen of Harrison and Patrick and Joan Allen of North Carolina; and five grandchildren, Sarah Duffendack of Lawrence, Kansas, Caitlyn Elias of New York, New York, Thomas Allen of Washington, DC, and Lucie and Sophie Allen, both of Baltimore, Maryland.
There will be a family conducted memorial mass at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 1, 2022, at Mary Mother of God Catholic Church in Harrison, celebrated by Fr. Jim Fanrak. Burial, with full military honors provided by the United States Air Force, will be in the Mary Mother of God Catholic Cemetery. A rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Friday at the church.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Holt Memorial Chapel. The online obituary and guestbook are available at www.HoltChapel.com.
