Mary is the daughter of Joseph Amiss & Aramitta R. (Strole) Meadows. She married Howard Wilson Kite, Sr. on August 5, 1939 in Shenandoah, Page County, Virginia.

Obituary: Mary Emma Meadows Kite, 92, of Newport, passed peaceably from this life Saturday evening, April 23, 2005. She was born Oct. 7, 1912, in the town of Shenandoah, and was a daughter of the late Joel Amiss and Aramitta Strole Meadows. A namesake of her maternal great-grandmother, Mary Ann Kite Shuler, and her maternal grandmother, Emma Jane Shuler Strole, she was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Her brothers were John Jennings, Leon Wilson and Joel Amiss Meadows Jr. Her sisters were Edna Vivian M. Moran, and Eula Clarice M. Montgomery.

She was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church having been baptized, confirmed and married in St. Peter Lutheran Church, Shenandoah, and upon her marriage to Howard Wilson Kite on Aug. 5, 1939, she transferred her membership to St. Paul Lutheran Church at Grove Hill, the church home of her mother's and husband's families for over five generations.

She was an active member of St. Paul. A charter member of the Young Mother's Class and also of the Women's Missionary Society (later the LCW) of which she served several terms as its president. She was also active in the children's educational programs having taught Sunday school, Bible school and Children of the Church. She and her husband represented St. Paul as delegates to several sessions of the Lutheran Synodical Conventions held in Roanoke, Va. She was also chairman of the Altar Guild for many years and had the distinction and honor of being the oldest member of St. Paul Church.

She was a graduate of Shenandoah High Shool and a charter member to the Grove Hill Friendship Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, who died April 7, 1997, and by a daughter-in-law, Brenda Blakemore Kite, who died Feb. 2, 2003.

She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and is survived by three sons and their families: Howard Wilson Jr. and Norma Hensley Kite of Glen Allen, Va.; Larry Eugene Kite, Harry Frederick and Dorothy Batman Alger Kite, all of Shenandoah; nine grandchildren and their families: Lisa K. Bricker and her husband, Tim, Christopher Michael and Christie Rennick Kite; Kara K. Pangle and her husband, Barry; Stephanie K. Day and her husband, Todd; Mark Edward and Elizabeth Cave Kite; John Frederick and Jeannette Kauffman Kite; Gregory Wilson and Brooke Monger Kite, Chad Michael Kite and Jason Todd and Karen Cubbage Alger. Thirteen great-grandchildren also survive: Logan and Abigail Bricker; Joshua and Jacob Kite; Jillian, Sean and Luke Pangle; Jacob and Jackson Day, Lauren Kite; Peyton Kite, Heather and Austin Alger, and Brandon Kauffman. Two sisters-in-law, Ruth Kite Price of Harrisonburg and Phyllis Claytor Meadows Templeton of Glen Allen, Va.; five nieces and six nephews also survive.

A service celebrating her life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Jeffrey Marble officiating. Interment will follow immediately in the church cemetery.
