Charles J. Sterner, 85, of Hanover Twp., Northampton County, passed away Monday, December 15, 2008, at home. Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Edward J. and Ethel J. (Perkins) Sterner. He left behind his wife, Linda G. (Ruth) Sterner, of 45 years. Charles served his country in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He graduated from Lehigh University with a B.S. and an M.S. in Chemical Engineering. He worked for Air Products and the Bethlehem Steel Corporation in research and environmental control before retiring in 1985. Charles was a licensed Professional Engineer, was a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and Sigma Xi, and was a former member of the Hanover Township Planning Commission. His love of science inspired his three children to become Ph.D. research scientists.
Survivors: His loving family: wife, Linda; a daughter, Diana S. Hamilton and husband Greg of Catonsville, Md.; two sons, Kevin L. Sterner and wife Patricia of Gilbertsville, and David E. Sterner of Lansdowne; five grandchildren, Thomas S. Hamilton, Emily J., Molly C, Jacob D., and Sophie R. Sterner. He was predeceased by a brother, Edward P. Sterner.
Services: 11:00 AM, Thursday, December 18, 2008 in the Snyder-Hinkle & Lunsford Funeral Home, 527 Center St., Bethlehem, with Rev. Willard Harstine officiating.
