Samuel Wallace Abernathey, age 90 of Glen Allen, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Monday, March 28, 2022. Samuel was born in Pennsylvania on July 10, 1931 to the late, Albert and Reba Abernathey. He is survived by his beloved wife, Gladys Abernathey; and his children, Larry (Melissa), Robin Haigh (James), Donald (Jan), and Gilbert (Lisa); and his sister, Nancy Gunther. A proud grandfather of 12 grandchildren; five great grandchildren, plus one due in June.
Sam's greatest enjoyment came from his family!
Sam proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. He spent many years teaching both in schools and in his church. He went on to volunteer his time with the Marine Corps League and served as the Commandant of the James M. Slay Detachment. He was an active member of the American Legion, and a truly passionate patriot.
The family will receive friends on Friday, April 1, 2022 from 10 AM to 11 AM at Truth Baptist Church, 8319 Lee Davis Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23111, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest privately at Westhampton Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions be made to the Truth Baptist Church Building Fund in his memory.
