On January 8, 1806, the community was shocked by the death of Tarleton Bates, the brilliant editor of the Tree of Liberty and the Prothonotary of the county, in a duel, the result of a political quarrel. He was one of several distinguished brothers. The eldest was the second governor of the state of Missouri, another was a member of Congress from Arkansas, while a third was a candidate for President in 1860, and became a member of President Lincoln's cabinet. The interment of Tarleton Bates in the Episcopal
burying-ground was attended by the largest number of people that had ever collected at a funeral in the borough.
