His mother, Jane died sometime in 1818, (his Aunt Jemima Gillespie Tallman, sister of Jane, married to James Boone Tallman became Joshua's guardians after his mother's death, found in Abstracts of the Wills and Inventories of Bath County, Va., 1791 thru 1842, page 90, dated June 9, 1818: Bond by James Tallman and William Sharp to Joseph Mayse, Robert Gay, George Hicklin, and Stewart Slaven, gentlemen justices, for $200 for Tallman's service as guardian for Joshua Burner, orphan child of Jane Burner.
