On February 11, 1865 he was mustered into Company C, 147th Illinois Infantry as a Private at Earlville, LaSalle County, Illinois where he was living at the time. He was mustered out in Savannah, Georgia, on January 20, 1866.
Lewis's first wife was Amelia Lacy (1847-1911) whom he married in Saginaw, Saginaw County, Michigan in 1870.
Lewis's second wife was Helen Nettie Lacy (abt. 1846-?), whom he married in Frankenmuth, Saginaw County, Michigan on October 28, 1872. They had one daughter, Rhoda ( FG #224811621) who was born on July 20, 1873. She married Albert A. Denzy, and they lived in Vassar, Michigan.
Lewis was buried at Brookside Cemetery, (aka Perry's Graveyard) Tuscola Township, Tuscola County, Michigan on April 5, 1902.

Vassar, Mich., April 3. – Lewis Brewster, aged 58, who lives three miles from Vassar, while walking on the P.M.R.R. track on his way home from Vassar, was struck and killed by a passenger train at Lambert's Crossing two miles from here. He was a veteran and leaves a widow and one daughter.

Note: When Helen (Lacy) Brewster, Lewis's widow, applied for his pension, Carl W. Garnum of Vassar testified that he was a licensed undertaker and had charge of the burial of Lewis Brewster at Perry's Cemetery (aka Brookside Cemetery) in Tuscola, Michigan. (Garnum was a partner in the Vassar undertaking business Atkins and Garnum.) He also stated that he was Vassar village clerk and that he kept records of deaths and burials.
