On November 17, 2007 Elizabeth (nee Lewis) Sappington died at home. Betty was born February 9, 1927 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The family lived in the 4000 block of 4th Street in Brooklyn (Baltimore City). Betty began her education at School #203 at 4th & Patapsco. She continued at Ben Franklin Jr. HS and at Southern HS for the spring semester 1941. Her parents, Herman and Sarah Lewis bought a small farm on Jumpers Hole Road, now the northeast corner of Kinder Park, which included Baldry's Pond. In September Betty was enrolled as a freshman at Glen Burnie HS. She and Herb rode on the same bus and by her birthday had begun the friendship that led to 65 years of romance and a 57 year marriage. After graduation in June 1945, she completed the program at Bard Avon business school and was hired as a secretary to the office manager at The American Sugar Refining Company, Domino, on Key Highway. Betty and Herb were married August 12, 1950 and Marjorie was born November 21, 1951 while they rented in Riverdale-on-the-Magothy. She rejoined the work force in 1954 as a telephone operator at the Armiger exchange, a fill-in at the Gibson Island exchange, and then became an assistant chief operator. Betty and Herb bought their home in 1958 from the original owners who bought it new in 1950. Betty left the telephone company, but a bit later began work at the Presbyterian Eye, Ear & Throat Charity Hospital in Baltimore. Presbyterian joined with Hospital for the Women of Maryland to create GBMC. In 1967 she became secretary to the co-administrators of S.T.A. of Balto. - I.L.A. Welfare Fund in the Maryland National Bank Building. She retired after 20 years. Continuing her association and working with people, Betty joined the North Arundel Hospital Auxiliary as a volunteer. She had accumulated 7,000 hours about the time she became ill and was unable to continue. Betty and Herb have one daughter, Marjorie and son-in-law Robert Smith, grandsons Scott and his wife Krystle (Parker) and Brian, a civil engineering student at UMD, College Park. Betty has a sister, Mary, and brother-in-law, Mike Zikan, nephews Garick and Craig Zikan, Craig's wife Diane, and children, Brigid, Sidney, and Noah.
