2377 Private D Brien (not Brim as on the cemetery memorial), 1st Battalion the Border Regiment. The battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing from Malta on 27 Sep 1899, landing at Cape Town on 21 Oct 1899, and were sent to De Aar in the Cape Colony. After two days there they were taken to East London, and then by steamer to Durban. Along with the 1st Inniskilling Fusiliers, 1st Connaught Bangers, and the 1st Dublin Fusiliers, they formed the 5th Brigade under Major General Hart, part of the Ladysmith relief force. They fought at Willow Grange on 22 Nov 1899, at Colenso on 15 Dec 1899, at Venter's Spruit 20-26 Jan 1900 (8 killed and 137 wounded) and provided valuable support during the break in battle to Ladysmith between 13-27 Feb 1900. After the relief of Ladysmith, they were brought round to the Cape Colony and took part in the relief of Wepener which was accomplished about 24 Apr 1900. They were then railed to the Transvaal western border and marched to Irene with the 1st Connaught Rangers. Private Brien died of disease at 18 Stationary Hospital, Krugersdorp, Transvaal. He is also commemorated on the 1st Battalion the Border Regiment Boer War memorial in the Border Regiment Chapel, Carlisle Cathedral, Carlisle, Cumbria, England (see:https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/176639).
