Following her mother's death, when Mary was 3 1/2 years old, Mary moved in with her grandparents who raised her in Herndon. Mary was the oldest of two sisters, three half-sisters and a half-brother. She graduated Herndon High School Class of 1937 and subsequently married her high school sweetheart, Robert (Bob) Murdock Lemon. While Bob served with the Navy for two years in the Pacific in World War II, Mary stayed behind in Herndon with her young daughter, Jean and infant daughter, Rose Marie. Subsequent to his return from the war, Bob and Mary moved the family to the Imperial Valley, where Bob became a farmer and their son, John Robert was born. Bob and Mary became members of Grace Lutheran Church and were involved in the building of the current church. They were founding members of Faith Lutheran Church in Calexico and were involved in its construction also. Mary returned to school to study bookkeeping. She started her career working for Farley Fruit Company in Calexico. She later worked for several schools beginning at the Imperial County Office of Education and as the first bookstore manager at the current campus of Imperial Valley College. Mary also worked for the Imperial School District, later transferring to the Calexico School District from which she retired after many years of service. Mary was the oldest member of Grace Lutheran at her passing.
Bob predeceased Mary in 2004. Mary is survived by her 3 children; 9 of her 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.
Mary's home was always the center of family activities and holidays. She embraced life and family, providing all her children and their children with unconditional love. Mary saw the good in everyone and was not judgmental. She enjoyed traveling with her family and went on many legendary journeys with them, including cross-country car trips back to Pennsylvania and annual trips to Mission Beach. Her family could always rely upon Mary for phone calls and comforting counsel. In later years, her schedule always centered around her grandchildren's and great-grandchildren's events, supporting their activities with her presence and warm and affectionate hugs.
Family, friends and those whose lives Mary touched are invited to a viewing from 9am to 11am on Tuesday, March 15, 2022 at Hems Brothers Mortuary, 1975 S 4th St in El Centro, CA 92243. Graveside services are at 11:30am at Mountain View Cemetery, 895 Scaroni Rd in Calexico, CA 92231.
