HANSON – Edna Alleian (McClellan) (Blauss) Howland, 93, a lifelong resident of Hanson and an active member of the community, died Friday at St. Joseph Manor in Brockton.
An identical twin, Edna was born in Quincy on December 16, 1928 to the late Sarah Annis and Edgar Cameron McClellan. Her twin sister, Edith "Ede" (McClellan) (Tobin) (Mitchell) Gilson, died in 2013. Edna grew up on Liberty Street in Hanson before moving to Phillips Street when she was 11. The house was built by her great-grandmother, Imogene Everson McClellan.
Edna attended Hanson schools and was a 1946 graduate of Whitman High School.
A lifelong member of the First Congregational Church, Edna was a former deaconess and sang in the choir for many years.
A talented musician who could easily learn music by ear, Edna played both piano and guitar. The mother of eight children, she taught most of them how to play an instrument. She also sang with the women's musical group, The Hearts, in the 1980s.
Edna was also very artistically gifted and painted watercolors and oils with an early American style reminiscent of Currier and Ives. She was also an avid bread baker and taught sixth graders how to bake bread in the kitchen at Camp Kiwanee for many years.
Passionate about weather and the ocean, Edna was known to bring her children and grandchildren to the sea wall at Brant Rock to see the surf during storms. It was fitting that Edna passed away at the beginning of the blizzard this past weekend.
Edna also owned Everson Island in the Green Harbor River in Marshfield where she and her family summered for many years.
A lover of nature, Edna enjoyed spending time at Maquan Pond with her family. She was also an exceptional athlete and taught her children to skate. She was a founding member of the Hanson Girls Softball League and coached her team, The Troublemakers, for many years.
One of the original members of Hanson Recreation Drama, Edna played many roles over the years, including Golde in Fiddler on the Roof and the murderer in the first Murder at Town Meeting play performed at Camp Kiwanee.
Wife of the late Henry Howland who died in 2006, she is survived by her eight children, Wesley Blauss, Laurie Ann Bianchi, Donald Glen Blauss, Marlene Friedrich, Eric Blauss, David John Blauss, Debra Ellen Blauss-Ripley, and Heather Weydt; step-children William P. Howland, Aileen Burns, and Virginia Ellen McCann; two sisters, Sally Ann Doyle and Maria McClellan; 19 grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her twin Ede, Edna was also the sister of the late Edgar Cameron McClellan Jr. She was the former wife of the late Donald Blauss.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 639 High St., Hanson on Saturday, March 26th at 11:00AM. Relatives and friends respectfully invited to attend.
