Orville Edwin Baatz, 83, of Rising Sun, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Dearborn County Hospital in Lawrenceburg.

He was born Dec. 30, 1917, in Switzerland County, the son of Louis W. and Mamie C. Cole Baatz. He was a retired farmer, having resided on McCreary's Ridge near East Enterprise for 70 years before retiring to Rising Sun in May 1988. He also was employed as caretaker of New Liberty Cemetery in East Enterprise for 12 years and was a grave digger for many cemeteries in Switzerland and Ohio counties.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having earned the Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon and Army Occupation Medal Germany. He was a member of the American Legion, Post 59, in Rising Sun, and attended the Church of Christ.

Surviving are one stepdaughter, Ronna Billingsley of Rising Sun; one stepson, Gary Rollins of Lawrenceburg; one step-granddaughter; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jenny K. Stalker Baatz, on Sept. 16, 1996; one sister, Charlotte Waite; and two brothers, Harold Richard Baatz and Robert Eugene Baatz.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Haskell & Morrison Funeral Home in Vevay, with burial in the Vevay Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the American Legion, Post 59, in Rising Sun.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Switzerland County and Ohio County life squads. Cards will be available at the funeral home.
