Obituary - Hubert Eugene "Gene" Lanier, 89, of Beaufort, SC, passed away on March 20, 2022, at UF Health Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. Born October 4, 1932, in Garfield, Georgia, to the late Jim Lanier and Hattie Hooks Lanier, Gene grew up in Portal, Georgia, where he attended school. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Harriett Whyte Lanier of Beaufort, South Carolina. Gene joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and served as a medic in the Korean war. Gene was an avid gardener and fisherman and often enjoyed fishing the creeks and rivers of the low country of South Carolina. Gene leaves behind four daughters and a son, Wanda Lanier of Fernandina Beach, Florida; Greta Lanier Kirkham of Saint Johns, Florida; Patti Lanier Smith of Wesley Chapel, Florida; Jack Lanier of Round Rock, Texas; and Gail Lanier Cutrell of Mountain Lake Terrace, Washington. Funeral services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 1, 2022, at the National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina, where he will be laid to rest with his late wife, Harriett. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until the hour of service at the National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the South Carolina Wildlife Federation or to the Easter Seals Foundation. Funeral arrangements by Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
