Served in the 5th Virginia Infantry, Stonewall Brigade, from 17 April 1861 until he deserted 6 April 1862. Enlisted in the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry on 2 Jan 1864 and was mustered in on 7 Jan 1864. Served in in the 148th until 1 June 1865. Transferred to the 53rd Pennsylvania Infantry where he served until 30 June 1865 and was mustered out.

The 148th was a fighting regiment in a fighting brigade in a fighting division in a fighting corps. (4th brigade of the 1st Division of Hancock's II Corps.)
