James, along with his father and brother Phillip, immigrated to the USA aboard the "Mountainear", arriving 18 May 1850. His mother and 6 sisters: Eliza, Jane, Ellen, Harriet, Mary, Elizabeth, immigrated aboard "Mountainear Cary", 30 April 1851. They settled in Baltimore, MD.
On 24 Dec. 1860, James married Jane Kelso, daughter of William and Henrietta (Carroll) Kelso at her parents' home in Baltimore, MD.
On the 1870 census, James, Jane and their 5 children: Harriet - 8, Phillip - 7, Eliza - 4, Sarah - 2, Kate - 3/12, were living in Rice township, Jo Daviess county, IL. James's sister, Eliza (Mitchell) Oxnam, was also living in Jo Daviess county, Il. James's brother, Phillip and his family, had lived in Jo Daviess county but by 1870 had moved to VA.
On 5 Dec. 1872, James was admitted to the Almshouse, Jo Daviess county, IL for St. Vitus Dance and remained there until his death in 1878. He was buried in the County Cemetery, Jo Daviess county, IL.
Obituaries for his daughter, Eliza (Mitchell) Wills Lowry, from Jo Daviess county newspapers, Feb. 1936, stated she was orphaned at an early age. Jane (her mother) must have died around the early part of 1873.
