The family name originally was Ohle von der Ohler and is thus recorded in Deutxches Adel's Lexicon, vol. 6, p. 592, as "an old Selecian family of nobility." In 1348, Peter von der Ohler lived at the court of Leignitz. Nicholas von der Ohler was judge of the superior court there, in 1382. Heinrich von der Ohler served with the Duke of Leignutz in 1 396. Hientz von der Ohler served in the ducal court in 1440, and from 1140-1600 families of Ohles and Ohlers continued to live in this region, later migrating to Switzerland because of religious persecution. (Silicia is an independent duchy of what later became Prussia but which is now Germany.) From Switzerland the family came to the United States.
