Claude Francis was the 8th child of J.W. and Cynthia Harkness. After his birth the family traded the homestead and house in Wilson County Kansas for another wagon and team to move on west. Originally the family left Hardin County Kentucky the spring of 1882. The fall of 1886 their westward trek ended in Scott County Kansas.
Claude's mother died New Year's Day 1900. Burial Grigston Cemetery, Scott County Kansas. In 1903 his father J.W., married the widow Jane Barr Barger. Claude left home. Worked for neighbors and spent several years working and living with the Seward family. Then worked around Pratt and Iola, Kansas.
His father, J. W. passed away in 1914. Buried by his first wife at the Grigston Cemetery. His entire estate was left to his wife Jane and son Brannon. Family ties were severely strained.
Francis Claude Harkness age 30 married Berta Reneau age 14 ?16 on September 27, 1916, Bingham County Idaho. It was a stormy, short marriage. Bertha left him and took the two children with her to Idaho. The family lost track of them.
Claude roamed the country, working many places, doing many different things, until settling down to work as controller of the water (Arkansas River) gates at Lake McKinney, Kearney County Kansas. March 1, 1943 and 1944, Kansas U.S. City and County Census' record has Claud Harkness registering at Deerfield, Kansas.
