She was born Oct. 12, 1913, in Humphrey to Ben and Mathilda (Klaas) Melcher. She was raised and educated in the Platte County Schools. After high school graduation, she attended cosmetology school in Norfolk. She worked in Omaha several years before moving to Fremont in 1938 where she owned and operated her own beauty shop in the former First National Bank building at Fifth and Main streets in downtown Fremont. When she wishes to limit her patrons, she moved her beauty shop to her home. She only kept clients who had been with her 20 years or more.
She married Carl Jones on Nov. 9, 1940. He died on Sept. 27, 1960, in New York City while on a trip. She then married Ivan Christensen on Sept. 18, 1965, and they moved to Parsons, Kan., in 1967. They returned to Fremont in 1973. Ivan preceded Mildred in death on May 1, 1987.
She had been a member of the Fremont Nile Club and Sat-ra Temple 59 Daughters of the Nile of Omaha. She was a member of the Smile Club and a Red Cross volunteer at Fremont's Memorial Hospital for many years. She also was a member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church.
Survivors include: a stepson, Stephen G. Christensen of Ann Arbor, Mich.; a sister, Frances Newhouse of Eatonville, Wash.; three nieces, Diane Rodman and Jeanne McKnight, both of Seattle, and Marilyn Garzione of Long Island, N.Y.; and a cousin, Rosemary Esch of Arlington.
The funeral was 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007 at Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel in Fremont with the Rev. Betty Hadley officiating. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Committal in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
A memorial has been established to the church.
