Sybil was born to Revolutionary War Patriot James John and his wife Mary Williams.

Sybil's father moved the family to Kentucky in 1794, and a few years after, Sybil married James Fitzpatrick 10 Jan 1797 at Bourbon County, Kentucky. The newlyweds moved with her father and family when they crossed the Ohio River and settled at the mouth of Nine Mile Creek. Nine Mile Creek was originally called John's Creek in honor of her father. Sybil and James were parents to the following children:

- Thomas Fitzpatrick
- Amey Fitzpatrick
- John Fitzpatrick
- Rees Fitzpatrick
- William Fitzpatrick
- Eunice Fitzpatrick
- Nancy Fitzpatrick

James died in 1814 and later the same year Sybil married widower Rev Elijah Mattox 19 Oct 1814 at Clermont County, Ohio. Together they were parents to:

- Edmond Mattox
- Sybil Jane 'Sibby' Mattox
- Demaris Mattox

When Elijah wrote his will, dated 12 Jul 1841 at Clermont County, Ohio, he named Sybil and all 17 of his children.
