Winifred "Wini" Suhr 85 of Brule, NE passed away on Tuesday, March 1st, 2022 at the Ogallala Community Hospital.
Wini was born January 30, 1937 at Merna, Nebraska, to Floyd C Annable and Cleola L Christensen Annable. She graduated from Brule High School with the Class of 1955. After high school she attended Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, graduating as a Registered Nurse in 1958. This began a 60 year career that she LOVED.
Wini married Donald D. Suhr In 1957 and to this union two daughters were born, Elizabeth (Liz) and Kimberly (Kim).
Wini worked at Perkins County Hospital in Grant, Nebraska and the Ogallala Community Hospital where she was Director of Nursing for a number of years, Riverton Memorial Hospital in Riverton, Wyoming, Clinical Research Center at Harbor General Hospital in Carson, California and Midwest Blood Services Collections Staff in North Platte, Grand Island, and Kearney, Nebraska. Wini retired full time nursing in 2003 to be with her mother during her illness. Retirement still found her busy, she worked part time as a nurse consultant at Wel-Life Assisted Living in Ogallala. She also worked at Sand Hills District Health Department doing monthly blood pressure screenings.
She was also a member of the American Red Cross Crisis Disaster Services Human Resource System Team, and she accepted four assignments: Illinois/Missouri Floods in Quincy and Jacksonville, Illinois, Hurricane Katrina/Rita in Montgomery, Alabama, Ice Storm in Holdrege, Nebraska, and the Indiana Flood/Tornado in Merrillville, Indiana. There were many times during disasters the she would watch the news coverage and say, "I wish I could go assist."
Retirement allowed Wini to volunteer for numerous activities in Brule. If there was anything that needed to be done or if anyone needed anything she was there. She had a huge heart for caring. She was a member of the Brule Improvement Committee, BCCA, Brule Alumni Committee, Gospel nights in the park. She was a member of the United Church of Christ Congregational Church in Brule, where she served in various positions, and The Women's Fellowship, where she also served in various position. Although she would not admit it sometimes, but she enjoyed creating floats for the Brule Day Parade. Some of these floats won the Grand Marshall's trophy. She enjoyed Brule Day every year preparing and participating. She was chosen to be the Grand Marshall of the parade one year. She loved her hometown of Brule. Wini will be missed by many.
Her hobbies included sewing, gardening, reading, and quilting. When her illnesses and COVID did not let her go out and help people, she began crocheting afghans, which with the assistance of community members, were delivered to anyone that she heard was ill. During this time, she made almost 60 of them, which demonstrated her caring heart for those around her. Her favorite activities were following her grandchildren in all of their activities. Before COVID, she even attended some of the next generation's activities attending some of her great grandson's flag football games.
Wini is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth Sherman and Kimberly (Bob) Sestak of Brule, four grandchildren, Christopher (Ashley) Sherman of Colby, KS, Eric (Tara) Sestak of Gretna, NE, Jennifer (Bret) Daly of Tryon, NE, and Kelsey Sestak of Lincoln, NE, and five great grandchildren, Corbin and Tate Sherman, and Myles, Easton and Preston Sestak, her brother, John (Judy) Annable of Palos Verdes, CA, her brothers in law, Glen Suhr of Scottsbluff, NE, Ron Suhr of Gretna, NE, her sister in law, Kay Suhr of Sutherland, NE, many nieces and nephews and many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Annable and Cleola Christensen Annable Hothan, her sister, Carrie Elaine Annable, her brother, F. Thomas Annable, step father, Ken Hothan, and Donald Suhr.

Her memorial service will be held Monday, March 7th, 2022 at 10:00 am, from the United Church of Christ, Congregational in Brule, Ne officiating, Pastor Lisa Hadler. Interment will follow at the Brule cemetery.
