HISTORY: Stella Alice Belle Weaver
Stella Alice Belle Weaver was the only child of Franklin Ray and Ola Allison Weaver. She was born in Dover, Ohio, on the 27th of October, 1920. Her name was in honor of Ola's friend, Stella Ripple, who helped take care of Stella after her birth; Alice was for Ola's mother; and Belle was for Frank's mother. As a child, Stella had long(below the waist) blonde curls and her mother clipped huge bows on top at the side. In later years, her hair was medium brown and she has hazel eyes and medium complexion. Early years to early fifties (age, that is), Stella was of slender build but now "middle age spread" is being acquired. She is five feet two inches tall. The Weaver family moved from Dover, Ohio, to Chester, West Virginia when Stella was about two years old. Stella attended the Chester Elementary, Junior High and High School from 1926 to 1938. In the fall of 1939, she entered West Virginia University at Morgantown, West Virginia, majoring in Home Economics and she graduated in January of 1945. From September of 1944 until November of 1944, she attended West Liberty State Teachers College to finish her degree from West Virginia University. In 1964, Stella returned to West Liberty State Teachers College to work toward a degree in Elementary Education. Between 1938 and 1944, Stella worked during summer vacations at the Taylor, Smith, and Taylor Pottery. While her parents operated their restaurant, she worked extra as a waitress. After her children were all in school, Stella started working in September of 1960 in Hancock County as a substitute teacher and a year later, as a full time teacher. She taught Special Education and Fifth Grade. In the 1970's, Stella went back to substituting in the Beaver Local District in East Liverpool, Ohio. In the spring of 1984, she completed a course in the Laubach Literacy Program. Stella is certified to teach in the program any place in the United States. When Stella was in the seventh grad, she decided she would like to play in the band, and she learned to play the clarinet and saxophone. In her Junior year, Stella played first clarinet and in her Senior year, she played solo clarinet. During her Sophomore year in high school, she started to take accordian lessons. When Stella was a Senior, she played an accordian solo with band accompaniment at the spring concert. She and the band director wrote her solo for the music to "Repasz Band". Stella met Burton Gayle Ward at a roller skating rink in the fall of 1938. They become engaged in December of 1940, at Christmas time. He returned from overseas in November of 1944, and he and Stella were married on November 26, 1944, in a beautiful ceremony at the First Christian Church at Chester, West Virginia. The minister was Rev. A.F. Hanes. There were between 400 and 500 people present for the wedding. When Stella's Mother was escorted to her seat, there was no place for her to sit so they had ask some of the guests to stand. The minister remarked that this was the largest attendance he had had for a wedding and he really wished they would all come back the following Sunday for the morning worship. There was a funny incident which happened after the wedding. Burt gave the minister $10.00 as a fee and much to his surprise, the minister gave him $5.00 change. Burt thought this was hilarious and kidded Stella that evidently Rev. Hanes thought that's what Stella was worth. In early December of 1944, Stella and Burt left by train for Blamath Falls, Oregon, where they lived until January of 1946. Burt was stationed at the Marine Base there for recuperation. In January of 1946, they returned to Chester and resided with Stella's parents until September of 1947, when they moved to their own home. Three years later they purchased the house and Stella still resides there. Burt and Stella reared three children who are Thomas Ray, born on the 11th of September, 1946; Patricia Kay, born on the 26th of November, 1949; and Elaine Marie, born on the 24th of September, 1953. All of the children were born in East Liverpool, Ohio. Now there are ten living grand-children and one grandchild deceased. On the 31st of October, 1980, Burt passed away and he is buried in the Beaver Mausoleum in Beaver, Pennsylvania. Stella's hobbies are sewing, cooking, tube-painting, reading, dancing and golfing. In 1983, Stella won her first and only golf trophy for low net, Flight B in tournament play. What a surprise!! The organizations which Stella belongs to are as follows: Crescent Chapter #49 Order of Eastern Star; White Shrine of Jerusalem of Wellsville, Ohio; Chester Arts Club; Chester Golden Age Club; Hillymays of Steubenville, Ohio; East Liverpool City Hospital Volunteers; and Beaver Creek Par 3 Ladies Golf League. Stella is also a member of the Christian Church of Chester.

She was a former member of the Chester-Newell Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the Hometown Christmas Committee and served as its chairperson for two years; a member of the Wellsburg Chapter 23 Order of Eastern Star; GFWC; a past president and member of the Chester Arts Club; WVFWC; past president and chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 6450; Hilly Mays; Chester Golden Age Club; and Beaver Creek Par 3 Ladies Golf League. Her husband, Burton G. Ward, preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1980. A grandson, Clifford Gayle Ward, also preceded her on Sept. 16, 1972. Survivors include her son, Thomas R. Ward and his wife Ethel of Hookstown; and two daughters, Patricia Blake and her husband Jerry of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Elaine Smith and her husband William of East Liverpool. In addition surviving grandchildren include Larry, David, Jerry, Terry, Brian and Linda Ward, Jayson Smith, Raelene Blake, Valerie Blake and Kelly Brown. There are also 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester with the Rev. Phil Fairchild of the church officiating. Entombment will take place at the Beaver Cemetery Mausoleum in Beaver, Pa. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday, where the family will be present from 12 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday one hour prior to the services. Following funeral services on Sunday, the family has extended an invitation for a gathering of food and fellowship that will be held at the VFW Post 6450 in Chester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at 1835 Franklin St., Dover, OH 80218.

Stella A. Ward, 84
Chester - Stella A. Ward of Phoenix Avenue died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at East Liverpool City Hospital. Born in Dover, Ohio, on Oct. 27, 1920, she was 84 years old. She was the daughter of the late Franklin R. and Ola B. Allison Weaver. Stella taught school for 21 years in the Hancock County School System from 1961 to 1981. Later she taught for 10 years as a substitute in the Beaver Local School District. A member of the Chester First Christian Church, she was active in the Discovery class. A 1938 graduate of Chester High School, she graduated from West Virginia University and had also attended West Liberty State Teachers College. Stella loved life and kept very active. Some of many activities included tutor for Laubach literacy program of Hancock County. She was a former member of the Chester-Newell Chamber of Commerce, where she served on the Hometown Christmas Committee and served as its chairperson for two years; a member of the Wellsburg Chapter 23 Order of Eastern Star; GFWC; a past president and member of the Chester Arts Club; WVFWC; past president and chaplain of the Ladies Auxiliary to VFW Post 6450; Hilly Mays; Chester Golden Age Club; and Beaver Creek Par 3 Ladies Golf League. Her husband, Burton G. Ward, preceded her in death on Oct. 31, 1980. A grandson, Clifford Gayle Ward, also preceded her on Sept. 16, 1972. Survivors include her son, Thomas R. Ward and his wife Ethel of Hookstown; and two daughters, Patricia Blake and her husband Jerry of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Elaine Smith and her husband William of East Liverpool. In addition surviving grandchildren include Larry, David, Jerry, Terry, Brian and Linda Ward, Jayson Smith, Raelene Blake, Valerie Blake and Kelly Brown. There are also 13 great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, at the Arner Funeral Chapel in Chester with the Rev. Phil Fairchild of the church officiating. Entombment will take place at the Beaver Cemetery Mausoleum in Beaver, Pa. Family and friends will be received at the funeral home on Saturday, where the family will be present from 12 to 9 p.m. and on Sunday one hour prior to the services. Following funeral services on Sunday, the family has extended an invitation for a gathering of food and fellowship that will be held at the VFW Post 6450 in Chester. Memorial contributions may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation at 1835 Franklin St., Dover, OH 80218.
