Joseph C. Gutenkauf, 65, of 1002 A avenue NW, resident of Cedar Rapids 40 years, died at his home at 8:40 a.m. Wednesday after a lingering illness. Born at Alburnett, Jan. 17, 1884, he was retired chief clerk to the agent of the Rock Island railroad in 1946.
He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and of the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks.
Surviving are his wife, Helen; a son, Robert L. Gutenkauf of Tokyo; four daughters, Mrs. H.T. Ford of Franconia, N.H., Mrs. Raymond Wermus and Mrs. Frank Lunzer, jr., both of St. Paul, and Mrs. R.F. Athman of St. Cloud, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Chris Schmitz of Gilbertville and 18 grandchildren.
Services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Thursday in St. Patrick's church by the Rt. Rev. Msgr D.J. Lenihan. The body will be taken to St. Paul Friday for burial in Calvary cemetery.
Msgr. Lenihan and the Catholic Order of Foresters will recite the Rosary at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Monahan funeral home, where friends may call.
