Elizabeth's husband Seth Shaw died at Berlin, Washington Co., Vermont on Dec. 4, 1848. She went west with her son Oliver Barrett Shaw. Oliver settled in Sonoma County, California. Later, her son Sylvanus Harvey Shaw followed with his family to California to seek his fortune by mining in the Sierra County hills.

In 1901, the cemetery was forced out of San Francisco and the thirty five thousand (35,000) buried at Laurel Hill were moved to Cypress Lawn in Colma.
