Abina (Nanny to most) was born to her father, an English immigrant, and her mother, an Irish immigrant, both born in 1875. Her parents married in 1904 and she and her twin Mary Elizabeth (who passed the same day that they were born) were born October 14, 1907. Nanny went through both WW1 and WW2. She was a child and teen for WW1 and married with children for WW2. Her husband Thomas Patrick Devereaux was drafted into the war. They had 3 children, Teresa Abina (b.1929), Claire Teresa (b. 1935), and Thomas Joseph (b. 1936). They soon split up after the war and eventually divorced. She and her children remained in the Southwark South Philadelphia area known as "2nd" Street. For most of her years she lived with her eldest daughter Teresa and her children at 1607 S. Front St. and 138 Greenwich St. During WW2 she worked in a factory making bullets. On Front St. she worked in the corner store that was a couple of doors down from the house they lived in (neither are no longer standing because of I-95). Her most beloved job was caring for her grandchildren.

We always knew that she loved us and would help us if she were able. Some of my most favorite memories are of her inspecting the Thanksgiving turkey to see if my mother Teresa prepared it correctly, her waiting until the Christmas tree was all completed and coming for a look (but by this time her eyes were really bad and she could only see lights), and her making me "eggie" in a cup. She was known in the neighborhood as Nanny to all.

Children:

Teresa Abina (who had 3 children)

Claire Teresa (who had 8 children)

Thomas Joseph (who had 3 children)

She has too many great and great-great grandchildren to mention by name.
