Merlyn Leroy "Shorty" Alvis

Merlyn Leroy "Shorty" Alvis was born January 9, 1946, to Kenneth and Helen (Maguire) Alvis in Omaha, Nebraska. He attended country school in Orson, Iowa. The family moved to Woodbine, Iowa and he attended Woodbine High School.

On October 4, 1965, Shorty enlisted in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in the fall of 1969. Shorty stayed in California after his time in the service. He was an iron worker in Oakland, California. He eventually moved back to Omaha and started working at a gas station and other various jobs. He moved to Battle Creek, Iowa and worked as a farm hand and also did carpentry work. Shorty moved back to Woodbine in the mid 1990s and worked with his brother, Merv, in the drywall business.

Shorty's true occupation was being a free spirit. He loved Dale Earnhardt Sr. #3 and the color black. He was a true fan of the Oakland Raiders. Shorty also enjoyed a game of pool or cards and taking care of the stray cats in the neighborhood.

Shorty died on Monday, January 16, 2006, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska attaining the age of 60 years and seven days.

Shorty was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Kenneth; and brother, Merv.

He is survived by his two daughters, Brenda Kuhlman of Logan, Iowa, Tandi Strickland of Danielsville, Georgia; three grandchildren; mother, Helen Alvis of Woodbine, Iowa; two sisters, Marilynn and her husband Virgil Mefferd of Battle Creek, Iowa and Myrna and her husband LaVerne Hunt of Omaha, Nebraska; and many other relatives and friends.
