George J. Abdulla, of Methuen MA, passed away while surrounded by his family on Sunday, May 18, 2014, after a long period of declining health.
George was born in Methuen on December 23, 1929, and was the son of the late Abdulla and Mary (Yazbek) Abdulla. He attended Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, MA where he was a star football player.
He enlisted in the marines in 1949 where he was stationed in Ocean Side, CA. Following his service, George returned to MA to work with his brother Fred at Joe's ice cream stand (soon to grow into Joe's Playland) in Salisbury, MA. In 1962 George opened Abdulla's Bakery on Lawrence Street in Lawrence, MA.
Aside from his generosity and love for his family, George was probably best known to the outside world as the owner, aka Chief, of the Winnipesauke Pier at Weirs Beach on Lake Winnipesauke in Laconia, NH, which he had owned since 1976.
George is survived by his wife of 64 years, Georgette (Khoury) Abdulla; three sons; George Abdulla and his wife Elizabeth, of Salem, NH; John Abdulla and his wife Diane of Gloucester, MA; Paul Abdulla and his wife Erin of Methuen, MA; six grandchildren, Anthony Abdulla and his wife Samantha, John Abdulla and his wife Bethany, Cassandra Abdulla, Jacqueline Abdulla, Colleen Abdulla, and Kristen Abdulla; 2 great-grandchildren, Kevin and McKenna Abdulla; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. George was predeceased by his brothers, Abraham and Fredrick Abdulla, and his sister, Georgette Abdulla.
George was a friend to all, always selfless, incredibly hard working, and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He had a love for horses (owning 23 at one point) and a passion for thoroughbred horse racing.
