A report from the October 14, 1879 from North Bend in the Badger State Banner stated that the Stevens grave had been disturbed. Two justices, two other men and the correspondent examined the grave and found that the coffin cover had been removed and then hastily replaced without turning all the screws back in. Examination of the body looked as though it had not been disturbed. It was surmised that the stench of decomposition prevented the grave from being robbed of Mr. Stevens' body.
