Mrs. Marion Prouty, 83, died early yesterday morning at the Home for the Aged where she had been cared for since the early part of the summer. Paralysis and heart failure were the cause of her death. Mrs. Prouty was born in Newfane Sept. 20, 1824, and was one of three children of Nathaniel and Olive (Willard) Taft. When she was a young child her parents died and she went to live with her grandfather, Josiah Taft, in Dummerston which was her home until she was 22 years old. She married in 1846 Charles Prouty of Brattleboro who was a carpenter. They built a home in district No. 6 (the farm is now owned and occupied by Luther Dustin) and Mrs. Prouty lived there until 1892 when she came to Brattleboro to live with her nieces, Miss Florence Sawyer and Mrs. C.E. Severance at 4 North street. She went to the Home a few weeks after their North street house was sold. Mr. and Mrs. Prouty had three children—Abbott, Alice and Florence. Mr. Prouty and the daughters died many years ago and the son lived with his mother until his death a few months before she went to live with her nieces. Mrs. Prouty had been a member of the Universalist church since she was a young woman and had always manifested a keen interest in its work although she had been unable to take an active part in it for several years. She was a woman of a cheerful and generous nature and one whose sympathy was extended to any who were in sorrow or trouble. The funeral will be held at the Home tomorrow, Saturday afternoon, at 4 o'clock and burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery.
