REINER, Rose Marie (Blum), of Mechanicsville, VA, passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2022, at the age of 93. After weeks of failing health, she died peacefully in her sleep at the home she shared with her daughter and son-in-law Terry and Randy Ferrance. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Bill, in May of 2021.
Rose Marie was born on January 15, 1929, in Irvington, NJ to Louise (Oberle) Blum and William Blum. She spent her childhood in Maplewood, NJ where she grew up with 4 sisters.
After graduating from Columbia High School in South Orange, NJ in 1945, she enrolled in The College of St. Elizabeth's. She graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Spanish. After graduation, she for many years was employed as an insurance actuarial.
She married Bill in 1956 and soon like most women of that era, turned her attention to raising a family. After the birth of the first of her four children in 1958, she left the workforce to care for her child and her aging mother.
She returned to the workforce as a substitute teacher and eventually a high school math teacher after the last of her children entered elementary school. After her husband accepted a job in Pennsylvania, she took a job in banking where she held various positions over the next 22 years until retiring in 1994.
Rose Marie loved to sew and knit. Her 1950's era Singer sewing machine got much use. Over the years she had pre-knitted blanks for future great-grandchildren. A few weeks ago, when learning of the future birth of a great-grandchild she went into her stash and gave the parents one of those blankets. Her passions also included acts of charity and her devoted spirituality. She was a woman of deep faith, who together with her husband, had great empathy for the less fortunate. They spent countless hours together volunteering for church-related activities. She was a lay member of the Third Order of Dominicans, which was a distinction she pursued alongside her husband.
She was a quiet strength behind her husband and family always providing support. Her devotion to her family was absolute. She was the realist balancing her husband who was the dreamer. She and Bill traveled extensively in retirement and took many cruises to various destinations around the world.
After retirement, she had relocated with her husband from northeast Pennsylvania to Madison VA. In 2002, after her son-in-law finished medical residency, she moved with her daughter's family to Mechanicsville, VA. There she quickly immersed herself in church-related activities at Church of the Redeemer, Roman Catholic Church, and was an active member of the Catholic Daughters. She was a part of her daughter's multi-generational household and was an integral part of her grandchildren's childhood.
Rose Marie is survived by her adult children, William (Theresa) Reiner, Frank Reiner, Pat Reiner, Terry (Randy) Ferrance, 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, and a great-grandchild on the way. She is also survived by a sister, Joan Cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5 - 7 pm, Monday, February 21, 2022, at Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy, Mechanicsville, VA 23111. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 22, 2022, at the Catholic Church of the Redeemer, 8275 Meadowbridge Rd., Mechanicsville, VA 23116, and will be live-streamed on the Church of the Redeemer Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in her memory to Catholic Charities of Richmond.
