Jamie M. Washburne
May 13, 1957 ~ February 18, 2022 (age 64)

James "Jamie" "Jamo" Mark Washburne, 64, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly at his home on February 18, 2022.

He was born in Petoskey, May 13, 1957, to Betty (Osborn) and A. Thomas Washburne III. He was the third of five children.

Jamie grew up in Petoskey and graduated from Petoskey High School. After graduation, he began his long career in food service at Audie's in Mackinaw City under the tutelage of Edgar Jaggi. He moved on to the Dixie Saloon in Mackinaw City as manager where he worked summers and then worked winters at the Imperial Golf Club in Naples, Florida. A chance meeting on the sidewalk in front of his childhood home in Petoskey resulted in a sales position with Sysco. This move led him to the UP, the place of many of his treasured childhood memories. Then in 2005, Jamie realized a life long ambition when he opened Scalawags in Traverse City.

Jamie was a member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge. He was an amazing storyteller and loved to make people laugh. He had a sizable collection of jokes and limericks to add color to his stories. He hosted the family Thanksgiving dinner at Scalawags every year, and always invited friends and acquaintances who otherwise would have dined alone.

Jamie liked to say that he was born the year the Lions won their last championship and the year the Mackinac Bridge was built. He was a diehard University of Michigan fan and a Detroit sports fan. He was a good photographer. In 2007, when the 50th anniversary of the Mackinac Bridge was celebrated, Jamie won the contest for the best photograph of the bridge.

Jamie is survived by his mother, Betty Washburne of Charlevoix; son, Jacob (fiancé Lily Zuccaro) Washburne of Tacoma, Washington; brother, Tom (Nancy) Washburne of St. Ignace, sister, Dana (Tom) McArt of Inman, South Carolina, brother, Mike (Brenda) Washburne of Charlevoix, and sister, Lori (Phil) Brewer of Holland; nephews, Andrew Washburne, Jason (Jennifer) McArt, Trevor (McKenzie) Brewer and Spencer (fiancé Olivia Slenk) Brewer, nieces, Katie (Hollis) Washburne-Nelson and Dani Brewer; his Aunt Emily Stratton; cousins, Charles (Julie) Stratton and Carrie (John) Gillette. He is preceded in death by his father, A. Thomas Washburne III.

A visitation will be held at Stone Funeral Home on Friday, February 25, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and again on Saturday, February 26, from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. with a funeral service immediately following at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Jan Boss will officiate.

Memorial gifts may be sent to the VFW (vfw.org) or Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org).
