Suggested edit: In Douglas Mahnke's 'Bright Glowed My Hills' he writes of Sam Boswell:
S. W. Boswell, affectionately known as "Uncle Sam", ran the Taney County Bank in Forsyth from the early part of this century until the banks were all closed by presidential order during the Great Depression. Uncle Sam was a good banker, small in stature and mild of manner. His gray mustache was always neatly trimmed. I never recall hearing him raise his voice. However, under this quiet exterior dwelt a man of courage who stood his ground under all conditions. One summer day in the early 1930's, a band of five men attempted to hold up the bank. The bandits struck at the noon hour while the village was at lunch and attempted to lock Mr. Boswell and two women employees in the bank vault. However, Uncle Sam had placed a loaded revolver in the vault and fixed the vault door so he could block the closing of it from the inside in the vent someone ever tired to lock the bank personnel in the vault. The bandits were really excited, being unable to loc the vault door on their prisoners. Their excitement grew into panic when Uncle Sam opened on them with his old pistol. One was wounded, but the others helped him escape.
About three years later, the sheriff called Mr. Bowell to come to the jail as he had one of the suspects in custody. The sheriff wanted Uncle Sam to see if he could identify him. Squinting in the light, Mr. Boswell looked the suspect over carefully, then said, "Yes, that's the man, all right."
The accused man was indignant and yelled "You are mistaken. I was never in your bank, sir."
Mr. Boswell, looked him straight in the eye. "Sheriff, roll up his left sleeve and you will find a scar there, he's the one I shot."
The sheriff did so, and the bared arm plainly showed the scar from the bullet wound. Later the man pleaded guilty and went to prison.
