Sir Alistair Buchan-Hepburn, 7th Baronet of Smeaton Hepburn, Haddington was the son of rubber planter John Trent Buchan-Hepburn (possibly resident of Ceylon) and Edith Margaret Mitchell Robb. He was a descendant of Sir Robert Hypburne, first Lord of the manor of Newton, who in 1245 was made recognisance of the Marches between the Kingdoms of England and Scotland. A kinsman, Sir James Hepburn, 4th & last Earl of Bothwell and Lord High Admiral of Scotland, was the third and last husband of Mary Queen of Scots. Sir Alistair's baronetcy was created in 1815. His son, John Christopher Alastair Buchan-Hepburn (1963-2017) predeceased his father and thus was inherited by grandson Sir John James Christopher Thomas Buchan-Hepburn. 8th Baronet, born in 1997.

The 7th Baronet was educated at Charterhouse and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. He was a captain in the King's Dragoon Guards, In 1957 he married Georgina Elizabeth Turner of Carlisle.
