Roby Ward Duke, 51, passed away Friday, December 28, 2007, at his home. Services will be held Wednesday, January 2, 2008, at 1:00pm with visitation at 10:00am at Wilson Knight Funeral Home in Greenwood, MS. Interment will follow at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Reverend Joe Focht of Calvary Chapel in Philadelphia, PA will officiate.
Roby was born December 6, 1956 in Greenwood, MS.
Roby was educated in the Tallahatchie and Sunflower County School Systems. and attended Delta State College before moving to Los Angeles CA at the age of 20 to begin his diversified career in the music industry. Roby was a professional vocalist, song writer and producer, who had received many awards for outstanding contributions to the Christian music and recording industries.
Roby had approximately 100 active copyrights, approximately 25 songs in CCM radio top 20's, and he had several #1 billboard R&B gospel songs. His vocal phrases (executed by others) and his voice is on the following films: "Titanic", "Ray", "Crash", "Pirates of the Caribbean", and more. He was an accomplished finger style guitarist: He participated in the Firstcom Finger style Masters Series and performed concerts sponsored by finger style masters organizations, finger style specialist for Irish guitar companies Lowden and Avalon.
He served in various churches in the his career as Director and Worship Leader between 1983-2001. He was involved with Maranatha Music on early modern worship projects and was the vocalist on "Change My Heart O God" Time Warner's first top 20 Worship Songs.He taught, at the annual Christian Musician Worship Summit, "Alternate Guitar Tunings", "Creative Life and Songwriting", writer and publisher teaching teams, and modern worship discussion panels.
He was preceded in death by his father, Grover Neal Duke.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his son, Brantley Joseph Duke of Bothell, WA; his mother, Ada Marguerite Clark Duke, of D'Lo, MS; sister, Barbara Sheppard of Shreveport, LA; and his brother, Grover Neal Duke, Jr., (Debbie) of Birmingham, AL.
Pallbearers will be his nephews and cousins.
Wilson & Knight Funeral Home of Greenwood, MS is in charge of arrangements.
