Velda May Baldwin Brown
1917 - 2009
Velda May Baldwin Brown passed away Jan. 12, 2009, in Ojai, Calif. Lively and healthy at the age of 91, Mrs. Brown died suddenly due to a fall.
Mrs. Brown was born on Dec. 18, 1917, to Harvey Jay and Viola May Baldwin of Merced, Calif. During her life, Velda was a dedicated working mother and loving wife of William Lloyd 'Bill' Brown (deceased).
Before marrying Bill in 1941, and after attending Merced High School, Velda worked as a cook and housekeeper in the Willard Griffin House, the founder of Del Monte Packaging. After the couple was married, they relocated to Santa Maria. In December 1942, Bill was called to service in World War Il. He was shipped overseas in the summer of 1943. At that time, Velda returned to work at the Griffin House with her newborn daughter, Rowena May. Three years later, Bill returned from the war and the couple eventually settled in Upper Ojai, Calif., raising daughter Rowena, and two sons, William Lee and Kenneth Lloyd. While raising her children Velda also helped support the family by working at Foster Freeze in Santa Paula. In I960, Howard Quick hired Bill as an office manager for Quick Plumbing Co. in Ojai. Bill and Velda bought the business in 1965 and ran the business for 24 years until their son took it over in 1989.
In recent years, Mrs. Brown also volunteered with the Ojai Valley Republican Women's Federated, serving as their membership chairwoman. She and her husband, Bill, were married 66 years when he passed away in October 2007.
Velda was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Viola Baldwin; her husband, William Lloyd 'Bill' Brown; two brothers, Dwight and Merwin Baldwin; two sisters, Gwen Kaiser and Mary Hancock; and her grandson, Kurt Nicholas William Brown.
She is survived by her two sons, Kenneth Lloyd and William Lee of Ojai; daughter, Rowena May Forde of Tacoma, Wash.; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Pierce Bros. Santa Paula Cemetery, with a reception to follow.
A rose planting ceremony and picture viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at The Gables of Ojai.
